I attend church almost every week, but I’ve never been to a Catholic Church, which might seem surprising considering it’s one of the biggest religions in the US. But, on vacation in Vegas, I wanted to attend a church, and this one was within walking distance of our hotel. I felt a bit like a fish out of water during the mass, trying to keep up with standing, sitting, kneeling, and recitations, but I especially enjoyed the music, which felt familiar to me from all my experience singing in choirs. I also loved the ceremony, the reverence, and sense of fellowship.
I think religion plays a huge part in the culture of a people or a region. And I think it’s important to put yourself in situations where you’re a bit out of your comfort zone, to be able to soak up new experiences and open yourself up to new perspectives. The church itself was gorgeous, but mostly I appreciated the devotion of the people around me, and I feel now that I have learned a bit more about those who practice this rich and ancient religion.
